L — Learn
Monitor KPIs, analyze incidents, and drive continuous improvement
Definition
Learn is the continuous improvement stage of COMPEL and the mechanism through which the cycle compounds. It monitors production AI systems, captures operational insights, identifies improvement opportunities, and feeds structured findings back into the next Calibrate cycle. Without Learn, organizations complete one transformation cycle and then plateau. With Learn, each cycle produces insights that raise the starting point for the next.
Purpose
The purpose of Learn is to transform COMPEL from a project management framework into a genuine management system. Learn operates at three timescales: continuous monitoring of deployed systems (automated KPIs and alerts), periodic operational reviews (monthly or quarterly), and annual strategic retrospectives that feed directly into the next Calibrate baseline. The Learn-to-Calibrate feedback loop is the mechanism that enables compounding organizational AI maturity.
Key Activities
- KPI monitoring — tracking performance metrics, model accuracy, and business outcomes for all deployed AI systems
- Model drift detection — identifying statistically significant changes in model behavior or data distributions
- Incident analysis — structured review of AI-related incidents, near-misses, and stakeholder complaints
- ROI measurement — calculating and reporting return on AI investment across the portfolio
- Improvement opportunity identification — analyzing performance data, audit findings, and incident patterns
- Lessons learned documentation — capturing insights from deployments, evaluations, and incidents
- Calibrate cycle feed — packaging Learn outputs as structured inputs for the next Calibrate baseline assessment
- Knowledge management — updating training materials, policy revision recommendations, and community learning resources
- Change detection and response — monitoring for regulatory changes, technology shifts, and organizational changes that impact AI governance requirements
Outputs
- AI Performance Dashboard — ongoing KPI reporting for all production systems
- Model Drift Monitoring Reports — automated alerts and trend analysis for deployed models
- Incident Registry Updates — documented analysis and resolution for each AI incident
- AI ROI Report — portfolio-level return on investment with attribution by system and use case
- Continuous Improvement Register — prioritized list of improvements for the next cycle
- Drift and Change Detection Alerts — automated notifications of significant changes in model behavior, regulatory environment, or organizational context
- Model Retirement Lessons Captured — documented insights from decommissioned AI systems including reasons, process learnings, and knowledge preservation
- Next-Cycle Calibrate Inputs — structured baseline updates, lessons learned, and recommended assessment focus areas packaged for the next cycle
Quality Gates
- Metrics analyzed with trend reports produced for all production AI systems
- Improvement plan created with prioritized initiatives for the next COMPEL cycle
- Knowledge base updated with lessons learned and next-cycle Calibrate inputs packaged
